And it’s very simple and intuitive to use. It’s extremely affordable – in fact, everyone who signs up for a Gmail account is automatically given 15GB of storage for free. ![]() Google Drive is Google’s own cloud-based file storage and syncing service, and it’s been around since 2012. In this post, we’ll explain how Google Drive works, and why we always recommend a dedicated backup solution for your important files. If you’re used to saving your work to a USB drive, external server or alternative device, moving to a new cloud-based solution such as Google Workspace might cause you to consider skipping your backups and relying on Google Drive. Here’s why…ĭo you back up your files regularly? If you do – and you really should – then you probably have a preferred method in place. Google’s built-in cloud storage service, Drive, is a simple, intuitive and secure file sync tool, but we don’t recommend it for backups. Once that's done, I run the Plex scan.Īs you can see, I like doing things manually and being in full control at all timesĮDIT: Note that my solution does not use any cache. Then I run the "prime" batch to update the read-only mount. When I'm done putting things into their final locations, I stop the read/write mount via CTRL+C. For this, I use this very simple command via batch file (notice the different drive offĭ:\Programs\Rclone\rclone mount -v Google_Drive_Crypt: F: Once uploaded, I use a separate read/write mount to move things around in Gdrive. I do not upload via mount, ever, hence the read-only. To give you an idea of how I use all this: I download stuff overnight, organize everything and then use RcloneBrowser by to upload everything to Gdrive. You'll want to re-run this whenever you make changes to your mount. This will basically cache the file and folder structure for much, much faster reading afterwards, and it does so very quickly. Run this after you mount the drive to "prime" it. Then create another batch file with this (replacing my path offĭ:\Programs\Rclone\rclone rc vfs/refresh recursive=true -timeout 10m bat file with the following (replace my path and drive name with your own, of offĭ:\Programs\Rclone\rclone mount -attr-timeout 1000h -dir-cache-time 1000h -poll-interval 0 -rc -read-only -v Google_Drive_Crypt: G: Make sure you have installed WinFsp before you try to use a mount with Rclone. I can watch even the largest 4K remuxes without buffering. My dedicated server has gig speed up and down, but my home connection is 500/500. The few times I had a problem watching at home was due to my ISP's peering with Google at the time. I've been using Windows to host Plex and the Gdrive mount on a dedicated server for about three years now, with almost no issues at all.
